DIY Website Search engine optimization (SEO)
64DIY Website Search Engine Optimization
To SEO, there are 2 aspects you need to focus on:
- Onpage SEO
- Offpage SEO
Onpage SEO
You definitely have control over onpage SEO, you need to have your keywords on the title and you need to have your keywords repeat 2-3 times in the first paragraph.
After which, you will also need to generate your meta tag keywords list and description as well. Make sure you have your keyword phases included on the lists and description.
You need to repeat the keywords phase a few times through out the content, but make it readable, do not over stuff the keywords otherwise you will be penalized by the search engine.
Finally, include a short tag line on the footer with your keywords as well.
If you have some images, make sure you include the keywords on the Alt tag of the images too.
Once you have constructed all the pages, create a Google sitemap, google like to have sitemap to speed up the indexing. You can definitely find some free sitemap generate on the internet.
Offpage SEO
This is slightly more difficult than onpage SEO because you have no control to all. You need to focus on generate backlinks with the right "keywords" on the anchor text.
There are a few things that I would recommend:
1. Write and post some articles on the articles directory. Articles are viral and it can speed up your link building effort.
2. Submit to search engine, you just need to do this once.
3. Submit your site to some free directory
4. Add your site links to technorati or some other social bookmarking website
5. Create a squidoos and backlinks to your site. Squidoos has become one of the Google favourite, you can use this to bring some traffic to your site.
6. Send press release. This is viral too if you are willing to pay a small price for immediate inclusion to search engine. I have done this before and my site shows up on Google top spots within days.
Finally, I personally like to create a Wordpress blog as a SEO strategy for website. SEO normal static website can be boring and tiring. Wordpress has lots of built in functionality to make SEO effort easier and more fun.

Your advice is great. All these link building tactics work. Wordpress is my favorite. But don't forget about category-specific reciprocal linking and purchasing text link ads from authority sites. These are just a few more possible ways to get links pointing to your site.

The onpage / offpage dichotomy is very useful in introducing SEO to beginners, as this allows readers to gauge how much influence they have over the results (traffic generation). You've covered this in your article well. Any thoughts on other ways of driving traffic to one's site? I'm into Internet marketing and I"m always trying to learn new stuff everyday.
